Compliment Giving

Sarah’s six tips for compliment giving:
1) Make it true! If you have to hunt to find a compliment you are probably actually looking for a conversation starter.
2) Try to avoid “destructive” compliments. Example: “Compared to you I sing like a dying squirrel!” Although this is a common form of flattery I find that it leaves both sides uncomfortable and dissatisfied.
3) Praise people for eternal things! “You have such a sweet spirit,” means a lot more than, “Nice shirt.”
4) Use your compliments to build up the other person and not yourself. It’s very easy to compliment simply to make the person like you.
5) Be careful in your compliments between the genders. Especially as young people it is very easy to give compliments just to get that certain someone’s attention.
6) Do all things to the glory of God! Don’t be caught throwing around flattery or empty words. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” -1 Thessalonians 5:11
